Everything it does

A short list, done properly.

Placed Memories does four things: you leave something somewhere, you decide what has to be true before it opens, you choose who can find it, and then somebody goes and gets it. Everything below is one of those four.

Placing

Leaving something somewhere

Photos

Up to a few per memory, kept at the shape they were taken in rather than squared off into a grid.

Voice notes

Record on the spot. The waveform is worked out on our side, so no screen in the app has to decode audio to draw it.

Video

A clip measured the way it plays, not the way it was coded — so a portrait video is not shown in a landscape box.

Words

A note on its own is a perfectly good memory. Plenty of the best ones are.

Locking

Deciding what has to be true first

A place

Drop a pin and choose how close somebody has to get — anywhere from 25 metres to 50 kilometres.

A date

A time capsule, up to a hundred years out. Judged against our clock, because a phone's date is only a setting.

Both

Be there, and not a day early. We tell them the date first — no amount of walking fixes a birthday that has not happened.

Neither

Some memories are just for keeping. Those open the moment you tap them.

Sharing

Who gets to find it

Only you

Where every memory starts, and where most of them stay.

Your friends

People you have both agreed to. Ending a friendship takes the access back in the same breath.

Somebody by name

Addressed to a person. It appears in their inbox and nowhere else.

A link

One link per memory, revocable in a tap, and it works for somebody with no account at all.

Finding

Getting it back

The map

Everything you have placed and everything left for you, filterable by what is open and what is still sealed.

The inbox

What people addressed to you, split by whether you can open it yet.

Nearby

Walk past somewhere you left something and it is right there.

A reply

Four ways to answer a memory somebody left you. None of them is a thumbs-down, and no count is shown to anybody.

Deliberately missing

Most of the work was leaving things out.

No feed, no followers, no likes

A memory goes to the people it was left for. There is nowhere for it to be popular.

No searching for people

Friends swap an eight-character code out loud. We will never confirm whether an address is registered.

No log of where you stood

An unlock saves the distance and nothing else. No coordinates, no background tracking, anywhere.
